Matthew 28:16-20
 
Matthew 28 is the resurrection story of Jesus that ends with the Risen Savior commissioning his disciples. Everything Jesus says here depends on the fact He is very much alive. A dead teacher cannot send his disciples. Jesus’ Resurrection is the proof he has all authority and therefore transforms all our priorities. If Jesus died and rose from the dead, then everything He tells us WE SHOULD DO and WE CAN DO! We must not let the distractions of life keep us from the convictions that sustain us for the mission that Jesus has called us to do.

Nahum: A minor prophet with a major message of Condemnation and Comfort.

Nahum’s prophecy presented a great dichotomy between Condemnation and Comfort.
 
“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Cor. 1:18
 
1. The Condemned: Nothing can stand against the condemnation of God’s wrath (1:2-6)
 
“for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.” -Exodus 20:5-6
 
“Nineveh was going to receive the judgement that had been postponed at the time of Jonah....Past blessing does not guarantee present peace. The people of each generation must seek and serve God for themselves.” -Clive Anderson
 
Who can stand before his indignation? Indignation- anger aroused by something unjust, unworthy
 
2. The Comforted: God is good, our refuge, and we are not forgotten (1:7)
 
The Lord is good “I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, and shall sing of Your righteousness.” Psalm 145:5-7
 
A stronghold in the day of trouble “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” Prov. 18:10
 
He knows those who trust in Him “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Prov. 3:5-6

God challenges and encourages us to follow Him by giving His presence to guide us and His promises to sustain us.
 
I. God’s Presence will guide us to the place He has prepared for us.
 
I send an angel before you to guard you on the way
 
To bring you to the place I have prepared
 
Tozer, A Cloud by Day and Fire by Night: If we are open to the Holy Spirit, He will lead us on the pathway; a destiny He has in mind for us. At this point, we may not fully know what that is. We may not know where we are going, but as long as we are following the Lord, we have nothing to fear. As we let go of our past, we can get a firm grip on the future God has for us.
 
II. God’s Promises will sustain us as we obey what He tells us.
 
Why was idolatry so alluring:
- It felt guaranteed
- It was convenient
- It was normal
- It was fun

He had with him a couple of saddled donkeys, and his concubine was with him. 11When they were near Jebus, the day was nearly over, and the servant said to his master, “Come now, let us turn aside to this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it.” 12And his master said to him, “We will not turn aside into the city of foreigners, who do not belong to the people of Israel, but we will pass on to Gibeah.” 13And he said to his young man, “Come and let us draw near to one of these places and spend the night at Gibeah or at Ramah.” 14So they passed on and went their way. Hebrews 11:32-34 ESV
32And what more shall I say? Be willing to offer all you have as gratitude for God’s love not bargaining to get it.
 
1. Be convinced of God’s great love for you!
 
Pattern:
1) God raises up savior
2) Israel rejects him
3) Gentiles accept him
4) He saves Israel
 
2. So be willing to offer God all you have out of gratitude NOT bargain
 
2 Options:
1) Human Sacrifice
2) Tabernacle Dedication
 
Jephthah’s response to the Ammonites in 11:12-28 shows that he is well-versed in the Pentateuch so vowing a human sacrifice would be strange for him given how strongly it’s denounced in the Pentateuch.
 
He is empowered by the Lord’s Spirit right before he makes the vow (11:29).
 
The loss of his daughter’s virginity is the emphasis when the vow is carried out not her death (11:38ff.).
 
2 Kings 3:27 shows that the Bible is willing to describe child sacrifice, which it does not here.
 
Jephthah is commended in both the OT (in the same list as Samuel; 1 Sam 12: 11) & the NT (Heb 11:32-34).
 
Vows for victory in battle are legitimate things that God responds positively to in the OT (Numbers 21:-3).
 
There is a provision in the Pentateuch to cancel out rash vows (Lev 5:4-5) & certainly someone who could rehearse the minutia of Pentateuch history would know this & rescue his only child from death.
 
Animals didn’t stay in the house in the ancient world, so it’s dumb to think that Jephthah thought an animal would come out to “greet” him

6 The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the Lord and did not serve him. 7So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, 8and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed. 10And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against you, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” 11And the Lord said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? 12The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to me, and I saved you out of their hand. 13Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will save you no more. 14Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” 15And the people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you. She was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter. 35And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot take back my vow.” 36And she said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to the Lord; do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, now that the Lord has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites.” 37So she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may go up and down on the mountains and weep for my virginity, I and my companions.” 38So he said, “Go.” Then he sent her away for two months, and she departed, she and her companions, and wept for her virginity on the mountains. 39And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow that he had made. She had never known a man, and it became a custom in Israel 40that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.

Four Challenges
Ephesians 6:10-20
 
1) Be Strong (vs. 10)
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
 
2) Stand Against (11-12)
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
 
3) Take Up (vs. 13-17)
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
